[b]matlab是一種由美國mathworks公司出品的商業數學軟體，是一種數值計算環境和程式語言，主要包括matlab和simulink兩大部分。matlab基於矩陣（英語：matrix）運算，其全稱matrixlaboratory即得名於此。它在數學類科技應用軟體中在數值計算方面首屈一指。matlab可以進行矩陣運算、繪製函數和數據、實現演算法、創建用戶界面、連接其他程式語言的程序等，主要應用於工程計算、控制設計、信號處理與通訊、圖像處理、信號檢測、金融建模設計與分析等領域。

1970年代，美國新墨西哥大學計算機科學系主任clevemoler為了減輕學生編程的負擔，用fortran編寫了最早的matlab。1984年由little、moler、stevebangert合作成立了的mathworks公司正式把matlab推向市場。到20世紀90年代，matlab已成為國際控制界的標準計算軟體。
雖然它以一種科學軟體的面目出現，但它更像一種語言，透過工程人員比較容易理解和學習的方式，藉助積木般的構建和解決問題的方式，將目前工程和科學界重要的問題通過軟體製作成工具包。最基礎的兩個部分是matlab和simulink，但最強大的部分卻是它的工具箱，每一代matlab都會增加一些工具箱，而且很多科學家還在不斷完善這些工具箱，一些愛好者也會在新聞群組中發布自己的工具箱。例如在matlab7.01版本中，simmechanics工具箱就提供了很好的解決機械模擬的工具箱，而此前如果要實現這個功能就需要更專業的軟體或者通過更專業的編程才能完成。
